Weight problems either high or low
Never in the history of the world has there been a nation US, with more obese adults and children, high risk factor for diabetes, cardiovascular disease (heart attack, stroke, and cancer)
Over 64% of the US population are overweight or obese.
The rate of childhood obesity has more than doubled in the United States over the past two decades. More than 15 percent of children and adolescents are overweight. A recent study of 15 nations found that American teens were the fattest.
“Overweight is now the most common medical condition of childhood.” (American Academy of Pediatrics)
A study by the RTI International and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, published in the journal Obesity Research, shows that the nation is spending about $75 billion a year on weight-related disease. Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis merely top the list. Almost 80 percent of obese adults have one of these conditions, and nearly 40 percent have two or more.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed obesity as a disease in its International Classification of Diseases since 1979.
Cardiovascular Disease –
Obesity raises the risk of heart disease two-fold.
One’s risk of heart disease and stroke rises after gaining as few as 10 pounds. high blood pressure, the leading risk factor for stroke, is twice as common in obese adults.
Type 2 diabetes – Gaining 11 to 18 pounds doubles a person’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
The overweight people have a higher risk of cancers of the breast, colon, esophagus, kidney, and uterus, according to the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on cancer.
For most cancers, the overweight people have twice the risk of those who aren’t overweight.
Women who gain more than 20 pounds after age 18 double their risk of postmenopausal breast cancer.
Being overweight increases the occurrence of acid reflux.
Below normal body weight or trouble gaining weight is a common sign of maldigestion/malabsorption. In essence a person eats but does not digest and absorb the nutrients so they are slowing starving themselves.
